Biochar is basically charred biomass used to amend soil. That is, its chemical composition is around 80% amorphous elemental carbon. It is relatively easy to make. All you need is fire and dry biomass. I have found that biochar that has been created by incomplete combustion of wood (and then thrown into a compost pile to mature and detoxify) is very useful in water retention, nutrient retention, and promoting the the growth and proliferation of beneficial soil microbes. Any ideas or comments about it?

Biochar also sequesters carbon from the biosphere for thousands of years, so it is useful in mitigating the effects of climate change.
